1) Justice Bobde appointed next CJI 

Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde was appointed the next Chief Justice of India (CJI) after President Ram Nath Kovind signed the warrant of his appointment. The 63­year­old judge will take oath as the country’s 47th CJI on November 18 and will have a tenure of 17 months until April 23, 2021. As per convention, CJI Ranjan Gogoi, who will demit office on November 17, had recommended the name of Justice Bobde the most senior judge of the Supreme Court to succeed him

2) DRDO’s Air Independent Propulsion system

Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) has a force multiplier effect on the lethality of a diesel-electric submarine as it enhances the submerged endurance of the boat, several folds. Fuel cell-based AIP has merits in performance compared to other technologies. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) program to build a fuel cell-based AIP system for Indian Naval Submarines has crossed several milestones in technology maturity.

3) Malware in NPCIL system

The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd. (NPCIL) confirmed that malware had indeed infected its system at the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KKNPP)

What is Malware? 

Malware, or malicious software, is any program or file that is harmful to a computer user. Types of malware can include computer viruses, worms, Trojan horses and spyware. These malicious programs can perform a variety of different functions such as stealing, encrypting or deleting sensitive data, altering or hijacking core computing functions and monitoring users' computer activity without their permission.

4) UNESCO has designated Mumbai as a member of UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) in the field of FILM and Hyderabad in the field of GASTRONOMY

UNESCO has designated Mumbai as a member of UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) in the field of FILM and Hyderabad in the field of GASTRONOMY. 

About UCCN

UCCN, created in 2004, is a network of cities that are thriving, active centers of cultural activities in their respective countries. The UNESCO Creative Cities Network now counts a total of 246 cities.

The member cities that form part of the Network come from all continents and regions with different income levels and populations. They work together towards a common mission: placing creativity and the creative economy at the core of their urban development plans to make cities safe, resilient, inclusive and sustainable, in line with the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

 The 7 categories for recognition under UCCN are as follows

  1. Crafts and Folk Arts
  2. Design
  3. Film
  4. Gastronomy
  5. Music
  6. Media Arts
  7. Literature

Previously, 3 Indian cities were recognized as members of UCCN, namely-

  • Jaipur-Crafts and Folk Arts(2015)
  • Varanasi-Creative city of Music (2015)
  • Chennai-Creative city of Music(2017)

5) IIT to partner with ISRO to set up space technology cell

  • IIT ­Delhi Director V. Ramgopal Rao announced a partnership between the institute and ISRO to set up a space technology cell
  • The cell will work towards carrying out focused research projects in the space technology domain with a specific deliverables
  • IIT ­Delhi was working towards becoming an academic partner of ISRO to conduct research in areas such as AI, nanotechnology, smart manufacturing and other relevant fields

6) India’s unemployment rate rises to 3­-year high 

India’s unemployment rate in October rose to 8.5%, the highest level since August 2016, according to data released by the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE).
According to CMIE, the urban unemployment rate for October 2019 stood at 8.9%, slightly higher than the rural unemployment rate of 8.3%.

The CMIE’s figures are in line with the findings of the latest Periodic Labour Force Survey, which had estimated an unemployment rate of 6.1% between July 2017 and June 2018, the worst in 45 years

7) Burning of stubble down 40%

  • The Union Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) has informed the Supreme Court that incidents of stubble burning in the three States neighboring Delhi and the National Capital Region have come down by 41% since 2016.
  • The Centre claimed that stubble burning has seen a reduction of 11%, 29.5% and 24.5% in 2018 in Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, respectively, when compared to 2017
  • Incentive schemes to achieve zero stubble burning have been introduced at the pradhan, gram panchayat, and village levels. 
  • Special central schemes, having a total outlay of ₹1151.8 crores, have been rolled out to tackle air pollution and for on-site management of crop residue and promotion of agriculture mechanization. 
  • The machines to manage crop residue would be disbursed among individual farmers for 50% subsidy and 80% discount would be given for setting up of custom hiring centers for these machines

8) Pegasus Virus

The Centre has sought an explanation from messaging platform WhatsApp after the
Facebook­owned company confirmed that some Indian users of its app came under surveillance using Israeli spyware.  Most of those targeted in India were journalists, Dalit and human rights activists and lawyers. WhatsApp filed a complaint in a U.S. court earlier this week attributing the intrusion to NSO Group, an Israeli technology firm, which claims on its website that its products are used “exclusively” by government intelligence and law enforcement agencies “to fight crime and terror”.
