    1) Defense of Andaman and Nicobar Islands exercise 2019 (Danx-19)

    Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC) has conducted the second edition of Defence of Andaman & Nicobar Islands 2019 (DANX-19), a large scale joint services exercise from 14 Oct to 18 Oct 19.  Spanning for five days, components of the Indian Army, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard carried out mobilization and field maneuvers to validate defensive plans of Headquarters ANC towards pursuance of the Command’s responsibility, namely ensuring the territorial integrity of the A&N Islands.


    2) DRDO signs 30 agreements on Technology Transfer

    • Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has signed 30 licensing agreements for Transfer of Technology (ToT) with 16 Indian companies, including three start-ups, at Vibrant Goa Global Expo and Summit 2019.
    • The DRDO develops technologies for the Armed Forces and has been carrying out ToT of these technologies to the defense industry for the end-users of the Armed Forces.
    • Indian Armed Forces are procuring ready-to-eat meals, survival ration, and emergency flying ration products from companies that have acquired ToT from DRDO. These products cater to the requirements of the Armed Forces deployed in inhospitable terrain and hostile weather conditions. These products have a high nutrition value and higher shelf-life. These technologies are useful for the larger interest of society.

    3) G20 Okayama Health Ministers’ Meeting

    Dr. Harsh Vardhan, Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare attended the G20 Okayama Health Ministers’ Meeting on October 19-20, 2019, held under the Presidency of Japan in Okayama City, Japan.
    The deliberations of the G 20 Health Ministers focused on four major global health issues, namely 
    • Achievement of Universal Health Coverage 
    • Response to population aging 
    • Management of health risks and health security management including Anti-Microbial Resistance (AMR) and its containment.
      1. On Universal Health Coverage (UHC) India's take is "Sab Ka Saath; Sab Ka Vikas; Sab Ka Vishwas’ for inclusive health was highlighted along with Ayushman Bharat, FIT India Movement, and Eat Right Campaign. 
      2. On "Response to Population Aging" India's take was National Programme for Health Care of the Elderly to provide accessible, affordable, and high-quality long-term, comprehensive health care services to an aging population. By 2050 India will have 20% elderly population
      3. On Anti-Microbial Resistance (AMR) India has made commendable progress by implementing a national action plan, establishing a national antimicrobial resistance surveillance system, and its decision to contribute to global AMR R&D efforts.

    4) Anthrax at Assam’s Pobitora sanctuary

    What is Anthrax?

    Anthrax is a serious infectious disease caused by gram-positive, rod-shaped bacteria known as Bacillus anthracis, which can be fatal for humans who come in contact with the infected animals. It is characterized by blisters around swellings on the skin, chest pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and fever.

    5) Two panels set up to revamp ‘British­-era’ IPC

    The Home Ministry is set to overhaul the Indian Penal Code designed by the British

    Why it is needed?

    The code introduced by the British in 1860 was necessary to amend as it is primarily based on the spirit of “master and servant”.
    In the British era, the police were raised to protect their interests, but now their duty was to “protect the people".

    Two committees comprising legal luminaries have also been constituted by the Ministry. The Ministry wrote to all States and Union Territories seeking suggestions to amend various sections of the IPC.

    6) India, the Maldives to take defense ties forward 

    India and the Maldives will take forward several pending measures to promote defense cooperation
    These include the lease of a Dornier aircraft, bringing the Maldives under India’s coastal radar chain network and a broad­based humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) exercise.

    7) Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveils the book “Bridgital Nation”

    Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today unveiled the book “Bridgital Nation” and presented its first copy to Shri Ratan Tata. The book has been written by Shri N Chandrasekaran and Ms. Roopa Purushottam.

    The book presents a powerful vision of the future where technology and human beings co-exist in a mutually beneficial ecosystem. It argues that instead of accepting technology as a replacement for human labor, India can use it as an aid to generate more jobs. The cutting edge digital tools can act as a bridge between aspirations and achievements - hence the term ‘bridgital’.

    The army had taken retaliatory action against four terror camps along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu & Kashmir, destroying at least three. This followed definitive information of terrorists attempting infiltration from camps in the Tangdhar and Keran sectors. 
    Damage to a fourth terror the camp was being assessed.  Six to 10 Pakistani soldiers and an equal number of terrorists had been killed.

    Why it happened? 

    Pakistan had resorted to unprovoked ceasefire violation, targeting civilians, in which two soldiers and a civilian had been killed.

    The Vice President of India, Shri M Venkaiah Naidu today presented ‘Most Eminent Senior Citizen Award’ to legal luminary, scholar and former Attorney General of India, Shri K. Parasaran at a function at the India International Centre in New Delhi.

    Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) is organizing the first edition of ASIA HEALTH 2019 from 16 October to 19 October 2019 in New Delhi. The conference included all the events and initiatives of the Healthcare Department.
