1) EX EASTERN BRIDGE-V
Indian Air Force is participating in a Bilateral Joint exercise with Royal Air Force Oman (RAFO), named EX EASTERN BRIDGE-V, scheduled from 17-26 Oct 19, at Air Force Base Masirah. The last exercise, EX EASTERN BRIDGE-IV was held in 2017 at Jamnagar.
The participation of the Indian Air Force in the exercise will also promote professional interaction, exchange of experience and operational knowledge. Besides strengthening bilateral relations, it will also provide a good opportunity for the air-warriors to operate in an international environment.
2) NITI Aayog launches India Innovation Index 2019
NITI Aayog with Institute for Competitiveness as the knowledge partner released the India Innovation Index (III) 2019. Karnataka is the most innovative major state in India. Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Telangana, Haryana, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Gujarat, and Andhra Pradesh form the remaining top ten major states respectively. The top ten major states are majorly concentrated in southern and western India. Sikkim and Delhi take the top spots among the northeastern & hill states, and union territories/city-states/small states respectively. Delhi, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Uttar Pradesh are the most efficient states in translating inputs into output.
About India Innovation Index 2019
NITI Aayog with Institute for Competitiveness as the knowledge partner has released the India Innovation Index 2019. The study is an outcome of extensive research and analysis, which looks holistically at the innovation landscape of India by examining the innovation capabilities and performance of Indian states and union territories. The aim is to create a holistic tool that can be used by policymakers across the country to identify the challenges to be addressed and strengths to build on when designing the economic growth policies for their regions.
The India Innovation Index 2019 is calculated as the average of the scores of its two dimensions - Enablers and Performance. The Enablers are the factors that underpin innovative capacities, grouped into five pillars:
- Human Capital
- Investment
- Knowledge Workers
- Business Environment
- Safety and Legal Environment.
The Performance dimension captures benefits that a nation derives from the inputs, divided into two pillars:
- Knowledge Output
- Knowledge Diffusion.
3) Britain clinches Brexit deal with EU
Britain secured a Brexit deal with the European Union more than three years after Britons voted to leave the bloc, but Prime Minister Boris Johnson must still win by a sharp vote in Parliament to get the agreement approved
What is BREXIT?
Brexit (a portmanteau of "British" and "exit") is the scheduled withdrawal of the United Kingdom (UK) from the European Union (EU). Following a June 2016 referendum, in which 51.9% of participating voters voted to leave, the UK government formally announced the country's withdrawal in March 2017, starting a two-year process that was due to conclude with the UK withdrawing on 29 March 2019. As the UK parliament thrice voted against the negotiated withdrawal agreement, that deadline has been extended twice, and is currently 31 October 2019. An Act of Parliament requires the government to seek a third extension if no agreement is reached before 19 October.

4) Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Council abolished
- The Jammu & Kashmir Legislative Council, the upper house of the Assembly, was abolished as per Section 57 of the J&K Reorganization Bill, 2019, which reduced the State to the Union Territories of J&K and Ladakh.
- 116 employees are working with the Council since the first Constituent Assembly came into being in 1957.
- The Council, which had a strength of 36 members, also used to be a part of the electoral college for the Rajya Sabha elections.
- The Secretary of the Council has been directed to transfer all records about the Council Secretariat, including related legislative business, to the Department of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.
5) TB cases see a decrease in India
The tuberculosis incidence of the rate in India has decreased by almost 50,000 patients over the past year, according to the World Health Organization (WHO)2019 edition of the Global Tuberculosis (TB) Report.
The report notes that in 2017, India had 27.4 lakh TB patients which came down to 26.9 lakh in 2018. Incidence per 1,00,000 population has decreased from 204 in 2017 to 199 in 2018.

6) FATF put Pakistan in Greylist
Pakistan escapes the blacklist of FATF after the International Cooperation Review Group (ICRG) discussed Pakistan’s actions for countering terror financing and antimoney laundering. Now Pakistan is in greylist of FATF
About FATF
The Financial Action Task Force (on Money Laundering) (FATF), also known by its French name, Groupe d'action financière (GAFI), is an intergovernmental organization founded in 1989 on the initiative of the G7 to develop policies to combat money laundering. In 2001 its mandate expanded to include terrorism financing. It monitors progress in implementing the FATF Recommendations through "peer reviews" ("mutual evaluations") of member countries. The FATF Secretariat is housed at the OECD headquarters in Paris.
FATF Grey and Black List
FATF maintains two different lists of countries: those that have deficiencies in their AML/CTF regimes, but they commit to an action plan to address these loopholes and those that do not end up doing enough. The former is commonly known as a grey list and latter as a blacklist.
Once a country is blacklisted, FATF calls on other countries to apply enhanced due diligence and countermeasures, increasing the cost of doing business with the country and in some cases severing it all together. As of now, there are only two countries in the blacklist — Iran and North Korea — and seven on the grey list, including Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Syria, and Yemen.
