1) Science Day opens on Day 4 at COP14
The 14th Conference of Parties (COP14) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) being held at India Expo Centre & Mart, Greater Noida entered Day 4 of its 12-day long Conference. With COP14 hosting ‘thematic days’ that focus on the different areas of work of the Convention, “Science Day” was observed today, wherein the outcomes from the recent scientific assessments of Climate Change, Biodiversity and Land degradation were featured.“Bringing science and policy together is a lot like trying to mix oil and water. It seems to be impossible. Science is a reductionist. It reduces complex phenomena into their fundamental parts. Scientists are always testing hypotheses, calculating probabilities and reporting uncertainties. Policymaking, on the other hand, is all about synthesis. Combining elements to try and form a coherent whole” said Mr. Ibrahim Thiaw, UNCCD, Executive Secretary, in his welcoming remarks at the Science Day. This segment of the Rio Conventions Pavilion “Science Day” brings together four major scientific assessments on land conducted over the past two years.
2) Megalithic sword unearthed in Kannur village
105 cm sword found by the Archaeology Department is believed to be 2,500 years old
The State Archaeology Department in Kozhikode has unearthed what it calls a Megalithic era iron sword, a chisel, and a few decorated pottery from a rockcut cave at Pothuvachery in Kannur district.

3) PM Narendra Modi to launch drive to promote artificial breeding
PM Narendra Modi is set to launch on September 11 a major six-month drive to promote artificial insemination in cattle in 600 districts which have less than 50% coverage of the technology. Currently, the national coverage is only 30%, though some states such as Kerala and Tamil Nadu use
artificial insemination rates for more than 70% of their cattle.

4) PM Narendra Modi to launch a pension scheme for traders
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch The Pradhan Mantri Laghu Vyapari Maandhan Yojana, the Centre’s pension scheme for traders, during a visit to Nagpur on Saturday, officials of the Labour and Employment Ministry said on Wednesday. A few of the first subscribers from across the country will be given pension cards by the PM at the ceremony, said Ajay Tewari, Joint Secretary and DirectorGeneral of Labour Welfare in the Labour Ministry
5) EX TSENTR 2019
Exercise TSENTR 2019 is part of the annual series of large scale exercises that form part of the Russian Armed Forces' annual training cycle. The series rotates through the four main Russian operational strategic commands. Russia holds a major military exercise every year at one of it’s four military Commands i.e Vostok (East), Zapad (West), TSENTR (Centre) and Kavkas (South). This year the exercise is planned between 09 September to 23 September 19 at Donguz training ranges, Orenburg, Russia. These annual exercises have slowly begun taking an international character, with Belarus participating in ZAPAD-2017 and China and Mongolia participating in VOSTOK-2018. This year, invitations for participation have been extended to nine other countries.
6) Russia opens maritime to Chennai
India and Russia on Wednesday agreed to open a maritime route between Chennai and Vladivostok to ensure connectivity between the two countries. A Memorandum of Intent was signed between the Indian Ministry of Shipping and Russia’s Ministry of Transport for the development of maritime communications between the ports of Chennai and Vladivostok after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
7) INS Tarkash at Lagos, Nigeria
As part of the Indian Navy's Overseas Deployment to Africa, Europe, and Russia, Indian Naval Ship Tarkash made a port call at Lagos, Nigeria today, on 05 Sep 19 for a three-day visit. The port call has been scheduled to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Nigeria.
During the port call, various dignitaries and government officials of Nigeria are scheduled to visit the ship. Professional interactions are planned with the Nigerian Navy towards further enhancing co-operation between the two countries. In addition to social engagements and sports events, best practices will also be shared between the two Navies. The ship will also be conducting a Medical Camp along with Nigerian Navy doctors for the local population. Tarkash will also undertake a Passage Exercise at sea with NNS Unity on 08 Sep 19, which will enhance interoperability between both navies.
9) Skill India announces Annual Kaushalacharya Awards
In a bid to motivate and incentivize more trainers to join the Skill India Mission, the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) today organized Kaushalacharya Samadar 2019 to felicitate trainers from different sectors for an exceptional contribution towards creating a future-ready and skilled workforce.
A total of 53 trainers from diverse backgrounds including experts of WorldSkills Competition winners, trainers from National Skill Training Institutes (NSTIs), Industrial Training Centres (ITI), Jan Sikshan Sansthans (JSS) and trainers from reputed Corporate houses were honored at a gathering of government and industrial experts held on the occasion of Teachers’ Day by Skill India.
The Ministry also announced the “Kaushalacharya Awards” would be an annual event to recognize the contribution made by skill trainers in the vocational training ecosystem. By 2022 it is estimated India will need about 2.5 lakh trainers across the skilling ecosystem.
10) Dr. Harsh Vardhan Launches the new healthy eating approach of “Eat Right India Movement”
“Eat Right, Stay Fit, Tabhi India Super Fit”, Dr. Harsh Vardhan said this as he launched the Eat Right India Movement of FSSAI, the new healthy eating approach which places citizens at the center of a Health Revolution through food and fitness. The campaign ‘Eat Right India’ with its new logo and tagline ‘Sahi Bhojan. Behtar Jeevan’ was released by the Health Minister, at an event here today on the sidelines of the 5-day ‘72nd Session of the WHO Regional Committee for South-East Asia'.Ms. Preeti Sudan, Secretary (HFW), Dr. Poonam Khetrapal Singh, Regional Director, WHO South-East Asia Region, Ms. Rita Teotia, Chairperson (FSSAI) and Shri Pawan Agarwal, CEO (FSSAI) were also present at the event.
11) India among top 10 nations in gold reserves
India has pipped the Netherlands to move into the list of top ten countries in terms of total gold reserves.
According to the World Gold Council, India has gold reserves totaling 618.2 tonnes, which is marginally higher than the Netherlands’ reserves of 612.5 tonnes.
Interestingly, in terms of individual countries, India actually ranks ninth since the International Monetary Fund (IMF) occupies the third position after the U.S. and Germany.
According to the latest release by the World Gold Council, the U.S. leads the country list with total gold reserves of 8,133.5 tonnes followed by Germany with 3,366.8 tonnes.
While the IMF is ranked third with a holding of 2,451.8 tonnes, it is followed by countries such as Italy (2,451.8 tonnes), France (2,436.1 tonnes), Russia (2,219.2 tonnes), China (1,936.5 tonnes), Switzerland (1,040 tonnes) and Japan (765.2 tonnes) before India at the 10th spot.
12) Muhammad Yunus was conferred with the 'Lamp of Peace of Saint Francis'
Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus from Bangladesh was conferred the 'Lamp of Peace of Saint Francis' award by the Vatican. He has been awarded for his contribution towards establishing peace and harmony. The award is a recognition for distinguished work by an individual for promoting peace and dialogue among people
13) Rishabh Pant broke the Indian record for the highest score by an Indian wicketkeeper in T20Is
India batsman Rishabh Pant broke the Indian record for the highest score by an Indian wicketkeeper in T20Is when he hit a match-winning 65 for the team in the 3rd T20I against West Indies in Guyana. He surpassed the record held by MS Dhoni of India who held a record of scoring 56 runs against England (2017).
14) Visit of Indian Naval Ships to Sihanoukville, Cambodia
As part of the Indian Navy's Overseas Deployment to South East Asia and Western Pacific, Indian Navy ships Sahyadri and Kiltan are making a port call at Sihanoukville, Cambodia from 05 – 08 Sep 19. The ships are part of the Indian Navy's Eastern Fleet under the Operational Command of Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command, based at Visakhapatnam.
During the port call, there would be professional interactions between personnel of both the navies, official calls and interaction with dignitaries of the Royal Cambodian Navy. In addition, social engagements, visits by the local populace and various sports events are also planned during the visit. On completion of the visit, Indian Navy and Royal Cambodian Navy ships would be undertaking a Passage Exercise at sea, to further build on the levels of interoperability between the navies to ensure peaceful and secure seas for all.
15) Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine has been named as India's 'Best Swachh Iconic Place' recently
Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine of Jammu and Kashmir was named as India's 'Best Swachh Iconic Place'. President Ram Nath Kovind will be bestowing the award to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) on September 6, 2019, during the 'Swachh Mahotsav'.
