1) ECI to host the 4th General Assembly of Association of World Election Bodies at Bengaluru India to take over as A-WEB Chair for 2019-21
The Election Commission of India is scheduled to host the 4th General Assembly of Association of World Election Bodies (A-WEB) at Bengaluru on 3rd September 2019. India will take over as A-WEB’s Chair for the 2019-21 term. Over 50 countries across the globe will join the meeting at Bengaluru from 02nd to 04th September 2019. An International Conference on “Initiatives and Challenges of Social Media and Information Technology in Elections” will also be held on 04th September 2019.
What is A-WEB?
The Association of World Election Bodies (A-WEB) is the largest association of Election Management Bodies (EMBs) worldwide. A-WEB was established on October 14, 2013, in Song-do, South Korea. The permanent secretariat of A-WEB is located in Seoul. A-WEB’s vision is to foster efficiency and effectiveness in conducting free, fair, transparent and participative elections worldwide. Its activities are guided by its mission to identify the latest trends, challenges, and developments in democratic electoral management and electoral processes and to facilitate the appropriate exchange of experience and expertise among members with the objective of strengthening electoral democracy worldwide.
ECI has been its Executive Board Member since AWEB's inception in October 2013 for two consecutive terms (2013-15 and 2015-17). At the last A-WEB General Assembly held in Bucharest on 31st August 2017, Romania took over as Chair and ECI were unanimously elected as Vice-Chair of A-WEB 2017-19. India is all set to take over as Chair now for the 2019-21 term.

At present A-WEB has 115 EMBs as Members & 20 Regional Associations/Organisations as Associate Members. 24 EMBs from Asia, 37 from Africa, 31 from America, 17 from Europe & 6 from Oceania presently are members of A WEB. I will continue to remain on the Executive Board of A-WEB for 2021-23 in its capacity as immediate former Chair of A-WEB.
The current Executive Board of A-WEB 2017-19 has 21 members wherein the Dominican Republic as the Immediate Past Chair; 5 members from Africa namely Burkina Faso/Guinea/Kenya/Malawi/Tunisia; 4 members from Americas -Argentina/Colombia/El Salvador/Paraguay; 4 members from Asia - Bangladesh/Palestine/Taiwan/Uzbekistan; 3 members from Europe - Albania/Belarus/Croatia and Fiji as the member from Oceania are included.
This is the largest ever meeting of A-WEB.
Over 120 Participants from more than 50 countries across the globe will join the AWEB events scheduled in Bengaluru from 02nd to 04th September 2019. By far this is the largest congregation of EMB delegates in India.
International Conference on “Initiatives and Challenges of Social Media and Information Technology in Elections"
On the 4th of September, an International Conference on “Initiatives and Challenges of Social Media and Information Technology in Elections" will be held. Eleven countries namely Benin, Bhutan, Bosnia - Herzegovina, Cameroon, Malawi, Mauritius, Palestine, Romania, Russia, Sierra Leone, and Togo would make their presentations on the subject.
2) Election Commission of India Launches a One Stop Solution to Verify & Authenticate Voter Details
On the occasion of the nationwide mega million launches of Electors Verification Programme, a special camp was held at Election Commission of India Headquarters in New Delhi on September 1, 2019. Unveiling the initiative on National Voters’ Service Portal (https://www.nvsp.in/) and Voter Helpline App
The objective of the program.
The main aim of the program is to improve the health of Electoral rolls and to provide better electoral services to citizens and increase the level of communication between voters and the Commission. The program has been launched at all levels starting from the State/UT Headquarters by 32 CEOs, District level by about 700 DEOs and at around 1 million Polling Stations by BLOs/EROs and will continue from September 1, 2019, to October 15, 2019
3) Major General Joyce Gladys Roach takes over as ADG, MNS
Major General Joyce Gladys Roach has assumed charge of the post of Additional Director General, Military Nursing Service (MNS).
Prior to her appointment as ADG, MNS, Major General Roach was holding the post of Principal Matron, Army Hospital Research & Referral, the apex quaternary care hospital of the Armed Forces. She was promoted to the rank of Major General on June 1, 2019.
4) Lt Gen MM Naravane assumes the appointment of VCOAS
Lt Gen Manoj Mukund Naravane assumed the charge of Vice Chief of the Army Staff on 01 Sep 2019. He succeeds Lt Gen Devraj Anbu who after an illustrious career, superannuated on 31 Aug 2019. Before this, the General Officer was heading the Eastern Command of the Indian Army.
5) A campaign for change management "Angikaar" for social behavior change was launched by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs
The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has recently launched a campaign for change management "Angikaar" for social behavior change. The campaign focuses on issues such as water & energy conservation, waste management, health, tree plantation, sanitation and hygiene for beneficiaries of completed houses under PMAY (U), through community mobilization and IEC activities. For this purpose, the campaign will converge with schemes and Missions of other Ministries dealing with these subjects. The convergence would especially focus on Ujjwala for gas connection and Ayushman Bharat for health insurance to the beneficiaries of PMAY (U). Apart from this, the Ministry also launched e-Course on Vulnerability Atlas of India.
6) Shillong Declaration, recently seen in news is related to e-Governance.
The 22nd National Conference on e-Governance (NCeG) 2019 successfully concluded at Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya with the adoption of the 'Shillong Declaration'.
About the Conference
It was organized by the Department of Administrative Reforms & Public Grievances (DAPRG), Ministry of Personnel and Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY), in collaboration with the Government of Meghalaya organized from 8-9 August 2019. Its theme was “Digital India: Success to Excellence”.On the sidelines of this conference, an exhibition was also organized during the event to showcase India’s achievements in the field of e-Governance.

7) State of the World Population 2019
State of the World Population 2019, the flagship report of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), has been released.
India accounts for over one-sixth of the world’s population in 2019 (1.37 billion out of 7.71 billion).
It has grown at a rate (1.2% per year between 2010 and 2019) that is just over the world's growth rate (1.2%).
It scores higher than the global average in terms of access to healthcare during childbirth and also has a much lower adolescent birth rate.
India’s maternal mortality ratio in 2015 was 174 deaths per lakh live births (down from 448 in 1994) while the global MMR in 2015 was 216.
India’s fertility rate in 2019 is 2.3 births per woman, compared to 2.5 worldwide.
Top five most populous countries will look like the following in 2027:
- India – 1.5 billion.
- China – 1.1 billion.
- Nigeria – 733 million.
- United States – 434 million.
- Pakistan – 403 million.
Early marriage continues to present a major cultural obstacle to female empowerment and better reproductive rights.
The absence of reproductive and sexual rights has major and negative repercussions on women’s education, income, and safety, leaving them “unable to shape their own futures”.
About 35 million women, girls, and young people will need life-saving sexual and reproductive health services this year, as well as services to address gender-based violence, in humanitarian settings.
The overall population of the world is aging, with the age group ‘65 and above’ growing at a fast rate. By 2050, one in six people will belong to this group, instead of one in 11 in 2019.
8) RBI has given 1.76 Lakh crores to the Central government to revive the economy.
On August 26, the central board of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) decided to transfer a surplus of Rs 1.76 lakh crore to the government-its highest transfer ever-sparking a fierce debate.
9) India's First Sky Cycling Park opened at Manali
In order to boost tourism and give and an all-new experience to visitors, the Forest Department and Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports joined hands and developed sky cycling park in the Gulaba area near Manali. At a height of 9000 feet
