1) Odisha tribals get a boost in their economy if single-use plastic is banned
5 million in the State involved in platemaking from leaves
The focuses are likely to shift to alternative products from single-use plastic that India plans to ban, millions of people, especially tribals residing in Odisha’s forestrich regions, expect an upturn in their income. Close to five million people in Odisha are currently involved in platemaking using both hand and machine stitching methods. They depend on two major leaves of forest species sal and siali for their earnings
2) Survey of India to deploy 300 drones for mapping country
Currently, the best SoI maps have a resolution of 1:250000, meaning a 1 cm on the map represents 2500 cm on the ground. The maps being prepared, according to senior officials associated
with the project will be of 1:500 resolution, meaning 1cm will represent 500 cm.
The aim is to map 75% of India’s geography about 2.4 million sq km of the 3.2 million sq km within the next two years. The organization aims to procure about 300drones for the enormous exercise. However, forests, hills, and deserts are likely to be left out.
The SoI has signed agreements with 6 districts in Haryana, 2 in Karnataka and 2 in Maharashtra
to undertake such drone-based mapping exercises. Every square kilometer mapped by drones will be
encapsulated in 2500 pictures and thus be a trove of digital data. Making the foundational the map will be a ₹400-500 crores endeavor.
3) PM Narendra Modi to visit U.S to address at UNGA
A delegation of politicians and foreign policy experts will visit the U.S. on September 17, ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit there to address the United Nations General Assembly on September 27. The delegation includes Congress leaders Manish Tewari and Jaiveer Shergill, BJP’s Rajiv Pratap Rudy and Shiv Sena’s Priyanka Chaturvedi. The delegation will participate in discussions on Indo-U.S. relations and other international issues.
4) South African emissaries to calm xenophobia fears
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has sent highranking emissaries on a mission to reassure African countries after a wave of xenophobic attacks. At least 12 people have been killed in the surge of mob violence targeting foreignowned businesses and homes, mainly in and around Johannesburg since the start of the month. Hundreds of economic migrants from neighboring Zimbabwe and Mozambique have fled to shelters and Nigeria has flown 600 of its citizens back home after they were targeted in the violence. The mission, led by former Minister Jeff Radebe, left South Africa on Saturday and will visit Nigeria, Niger, Ghana, Senegal, Tanzania, DR Congo, and Zambia
5) Restored Jayakar Bungalow inaugurated by Shri Prakash Javadekar at NFAI
Newly restored Jayakar Bungalow, an iconic heritage structure of Pune, was inaugurated today by Shri Prakash Javadekar, Minister of Information and Broadcasting and Environment, Forest and Climate Change at National Film Archive of India (NFAI). The bungalow will house a digital film library where film researchers can access the rich film database of the Archive. Also available would be personalized viewing spaces for watching a movie from NFAI collection. The Minister released a special booklet ‘Parampara: An ode to Jayakar Bungalow’ that chronicles the history of bungalow along with the story of its restoration. A special feature of the booklet is the experiences shared by some of the renowned film artists including Shabana Azmi and Rehana Sultan among others, who had stayed in Jayakar Bungalow as part of FTII girls hostel. The Minister also launched a mobile app for booking the slot for viewing films at NFAI.
6) Indian Railways to Undertake one More Drive of “MASSIVE SHRAMDAN “ to Focus on “COLLECTION OF PLASTIC WASTE”
Indian Railways will undertake one more drive of “MASSIVE SHRAMDAN“ with the main focus on “COLLECTION OF PLASTIC WASTE”. This is to be done this Tuesday, the 17th of September 2019. In the recent past, such drives are being undertaken by Railways. This Shramadan is for:-
- Enhanced cleanliness, through the collection of plastic waste from all railway premises. Particular attention to be given to approaches to stations
- Creating awareness for a greater impact against single-use plastic.
- Displaying Replacements/ Substitutes for such plastic items.
- For distributing Cloth bags in large numbers as advised by the Environment and Housekeeping Management Division of Railways through its letter dated 12.9.2019.
- Educating all in Railways, including vendors to be prepared for the ban of single-use plastic with effect from 02.10.2019. Single-use plastic means usage of any plastic below 50 microns, in any manner.
7) Israel and India have planned to exchange notes regarding the Lunar Mission
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) announced that it is to exchange notes with Israel's private space center, SpaceIL, the two countries are planning to exchange notes and discuss the factors that led to the failure of the Lander's landing.
8) The Jeevan Kaushal curriculum designed to impart and strengthen the knowledge, skills, and dispositions believed to be the best requisites of the current Industry.
Life skills (Jeevan Kaushal) curriculum covers the set of human talents acquired by an individual via classroom learning or life experience that can help them to deal with problems encountered in day to day life. This includes the core skills each individual must possess internally as well as externally for the betterment of self and the society as a whole.
9) Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to visit Delhi
The October 3-6 visit of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will include a summit level meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Ms. Hasina and Mr. Modi would discuss several
bilateral issues on October 5 but did not reveal specifics. Both leaders are expected to meet on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York later this month. It appears that Dhaka will highlight its economic success to draw investment from India during the Premier Hasina’s visit when she is also expected to participate in the India Economic Forum.
10) Activists form a forum for river protection
Activists of various organizations in Odisha’s Ganjam district came together to form the ‘Nadi Surakhya Manch’ (River Protection Forum) to save rivers from degradation. The organization took
shape during a meeting convened by the Forum for Ganjam, Mahanadi Bachao Andolan and Aryabhatta Foundation in Berhampur. It was attended by representatives from different parts of
the district as well as retired engineers of the irrigation department.
Indiscriminate sand lifting, overgrowth of weeds on riverbeds and increasing shallowness of riverbeds along with rising water pollution were major issues discussed during the meeting. The Rushikulya river, its tributaries, and the Bahuda river crisscross Ganjam district.

Due to indiscriminate sand lifting, the remnant clay on riverbeds is providing scope for the growth of various wild weeds. The rivers in the Ganjam district do not have an adequate perennial flow of water. Sand lifting and overgrowth of weeds is a major reason behind the increase in flash flood situations
