Chaukandi Stupa
gets a national importance of monument by the ASI (Archaeological Survey of
India). The Chaukandi Stupa is located in Easter Uttar Pradesh in Sarnath which
is near to the old ancient city of Hindu Varanasi. Sarnath has one more Stupa
which is Dhamekh Stupa.
Chaukandi
Stupa was built in 5th century AD in the mark of the place where
Buddha met his first five disciples or Panchavargiya Bhikshu who were friend of
Lord Buddha but later on they become his follower. The name of 5 disciple are
Kondanna, Bhaddiya, Vappa, Mahanama and Assaji they supported him during his 6
years of Dushkarak Kriya (self-mortification). The name Chaukandi was given
because of its four armed plan.
The importance
given to the monument because of the many foreign traveler like from China and
Japan where Buddhism is being followed come to see the Sarnath’s Chaukandi
Stupa where Lord Buddha given knowledge to his first five disciple.
Now what is
the ancient monument of national important is? And function does it do?
Under section
4 of ancient monument and archaeological sites and remains act, 1958 empowers
government to keep the historical landmark well maintained but the monument
should be 100 years old and has played a vital role in Indian history. Now ASI
will take care of the monument ASI comes under the Ministry of Culture. It is a
good thing that now central government will take care of Chaukandi Stupa
